Safe Digging: Celebration Ends but the Party Continues
April was National Safe Digging Awareness month, something we at KorTerra celebrate heartily. We took every opportunity to share the Call Before You Dig message, as it literally can save a life. Being in the Damage Prevention Industry, we treat these events like holidays.
This year, the KorTerra staff participated in a delectable pulled pork BBQ potluck lunch, a ladder golf tournament so competitive it rivaled the Olympics (so the winners tell themselves), and what was probably the biggest chili cook-off known to man (or at least a couple of men who have never been to a chili cook-off before.)
Of course, it doesn’t matter how we celebrate because the spirit of the festivities is concrete. Ten years ago, 811 became the FCC-designated national three-digit number to Call Before You Dig. Since then, hundreds of thousands of potential damages have been avoided with calls to 811.
As a company that provides the Damage Prevention Industry’s leading One-Call Ticket Management software, we revel in this success, but we know there is more to do.
According to the 811 website, “An underground utility line is damaged once every six minutes nationwide because someone decided to dig without first calling 811.” What some people don’t anticipate is that damage to an underground utility can be destructive to property, or worse, lethal. By calling 811 to locate the underground utilities before you dig, you reduce the chance of damage to less than 1%.
So April kicks off weather for digging, and appropriately what the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate have recognized as National Safe Digging Month (NSDM) since 2007. The end of April may close out NSDM, but it also launches us into a season of digging. With over 20 million miles of underground utilities in the US, it’s imperative that we keep this party going and work together to spread the word:
CALL BEFORE YOU DIG!
It could save a life!
